Dana.

Security.

The people who watched.

The ones who looked away.

Her mother.

Her father.

The first venture conference.

The executive with the coffee cup.

The partner who had called her a diversity hire.

She did not write Garrett’s name.

That surprised her.

She had no interest in turning the keynote into public execution.

The story was larger than him.

At 1:38, Willa stopped.

Read the document once.

Changed three words.

Then closed the cover.

Rachel returned.

“Ready?”

“No.”

Rachel waited.

Willa stood.

“Let’s go.”

The grand ballroom seated 420.

Every seat was occupied.

Garrett sat in the fifth row, center.

Tessa beside him.

Brad two rows back, though he had left the group earlier to speak with an investor.

Garrett was checking the Prism pitch deck again.

His presentation was scheduled for later that afternoon.

He had rehearsed it more than forty times.

Slide one.

The problem.

Slide two.

Market size.

Slide three.

Technology.

Slide four.

Customer traction.

Then margins.

Retention.

Expansion.

Ask.

Forty million dollars.

Ascend Capital was the target.

Garrett had expected someone from the fund to approach him before the pitch.

Nobody had.

He assumed that meant they were maintaining distance until the official session.

The master of ceremonies stepped to the podium.

“Good afternoon.”

The room quieted.

“Our keynote speaker today has quietly shaped venture capital for more than a decade.”

Garrett looked up.

“Her fund manages approximately $2.3 billion and has deployed more than $1.8 billion across 114 companies.”

Garrett leaned forward.

He liked those numbers because he had memorized them.

“Forty-one of those companies are currently valued above five hundred million dollars.”

Tessa lifted her phone to record.

“She does few interviews.”

“She rarely appears on podcasts.”

“She has built her reputation through disciplined investing rather than visibility.”

Garrett opened a browser on his phone.

“Please welcome the founder and managing partner of Ascend Capital…”

His fingers began typing.

Willa Townsend.

The name appeared on the screen.

An old photograph loaded.

Garrett’s body went cold.

“…Willa Townsend.”

Applause began.

Willa stepped from behind the curtain.

Navy blazer.

Flat shoes.

No jewelry.

The woman from the chair.

Tessa’s phone slowly lowered.

Brad, two rows back, whispered:

“Oh, no.”

Garrett stopped breathing.

It was not metaphorical.

For two or three seconds, he genuinely forgot to inhale.

Willa crossed the stage.

Set her iPad on the glass podium.

Looked out over the room.

She found Garrett immediately.

Of course she did.

Their eyes met.

Two seconds.

No smile.

No triumph.

Then Willa looked away.

“Good afternoon.”

Her voice filled the ballroom.
