Quiet.
Final.
“You moved a passenger for a friend.”
Graham swallowed.
“You used an emergency-exit eligibility rule as an excuse after the passenger had already passed the required safety check.”
“I exercised senior crew judgment.”
“You wrote lies.”
“I documented a difficult interaction.”
“You threatened a young woman’s career to cover it.”
Graham looked at Lily.
Lily wished he would not.
“Her probationary performance has been inconsistent,” he said. “This isn’t about one report.”
Mrs. Ashcroft turned to Lily.
“You’re not losing your job.”
Lily inhaled sharply.
Then Mrs. Ashcroft looked back at Graham.
“But you are relieved from duty effective immediately pending formal investigation.”
Graham pushed his chair back.
“Please, Mrs. Ashcroft. Twenty years with this company.”
“Then you should have known better.”
His face reddened.
“Twenty years has to count for something.”
“It does.”
Mrs. Ashcroft’s voice softened, which somehow made the words harsher.
“It tells me you had twenty years to learn what authority is for.”
Nobody spoke.
She picked up the false report and looked at the first paragraph again.
“You told me that seat needed someone who could help in an emergency.”
Graham stared at the table.
“Today, she was the only one who did.”
He looked up.
Mrs. Ashcroft nodded toward Lily.
“You didn’t know who I was, Lily.”
“No, ma’am.”
“That’s exactly why it mattered.”
Lily’s throat tightened.
Mrs. Ashcroft returned the report to the table.
“Your probation ends Friday?”
“Yes, ma’am.”
“It won’t end the way he planned.”
“Thank you, Mrs. Ashcroft.”
“We’ll talk about your next step on Monday.”
Then, as though the entire room had not just shifted beneath everyone’s feet, Mrs. Ashcroft looked toward the coffee machine.
“Now, would someone please get me a cup of tea?”
Mr. Doyle moved so quickly toward the machine that Lily nearly laughed.
Mrs. Ashcroft noticed.
“No.”
He stopped.
She looked at Lily.
“You already brought me tea once under difficult circumstances. Sit down.”
Then she looked toward Graham.
“Mr. Doyle can make this one.”
For the first time all day, Lily saw Graham lower his eyes.
Mr. Doyle filled the kettle.
Mrs. Ashcroft folded the incident report in half and handed it to Lily.
“Keep this.”
Lily looked confused.
“Why?”
