“That is a careful answer.”

“It is an accurate one.”

She looked at the photograph.

“There was a mechanic named Luis Ortega.”

Lily waited.

“He was twenty-one. Maybe twenty-two. Youngest mechanic we had.”

Mrs. Ashcroft’s voice changed.

“One winter morning, I wanted to launch a flight before freezing rain reached the field. Luis told me he did not like the response on a hydraulic control during the preflight check.”

“What did you do?”

“I told him the aircraft had passed the previous inspection and we were already behind schedule.”

Lily looked at her.

Mrs. Ashcroft continued.

“He repeated that he did not like the response.”

“Did you listen?”

“Not immediately.”

The admission surprised Lily.

“I was the founder. The chief pilot was sick. We had twenty-six passengers waiting and a weather window closing.”

She folded her arms.

“I told him to sign the release if he believed the aircraft was airworthy.”

“And?”

“He refused.”

Lily smiled faintly.

Mrs. Ashcroft looked at her.

“Sound familiar?”

“A little.”

“I was furious.”

“What happened?”

“Luis opened the access panel again. He found a fitting beginning to fail. Small enough that another person might have passed it. Big enough that it could have become a serious problem in flight.”

Mrs. Ashcroft looked at the old aircraft in the photograph.

“I apologized.”

“Did he stay?”

“Thirty-four years.”

Lily blinked.

“He retired from Maintenance Control.”

Mrs. Ashcroft smiled.

“He never let me forget it.”

“Is that why you believed me?”

“No.”

The answer came immediately.

“I believed evidence. Your refusal made me look for it.”

She touched the edge of the exhibit case.

“But Luis taught me a lesson I apparently needed to relearn as the company grew. Authority becomes dangerous when the person holding it starts treating hesitation as disobedience.”

Lily thought about Graham’s face in the galley.

“Did you ever threaten Luis’s job?”

Mrs. Ashcroft looked ashamed.

“I told him we could find another mechanic if he was unwilling to support operations.”

Lily stared.

“You actually said that?”

“I was twenty-nine and very impressed with myself.”

“What did he say?”

Mrs. Ashcroft smiled fully.

“He said, ‘Then find one who likes leaking hydraulics.’”

Lily laughed so hard she had to cover her mouth.

The old woman laughed too.

“What happened to the flight?”

“Canceled.”

“Passengers angry?”

“Extremely.”
