“He’s a high-value passenger. We make service accommodations all the time.”
“Then use a customer-service reason code,” Mrs. Ashcroft said. “You used safety because you knew preference would not justify displacing an already seated passenger.”
Graham said nothing.
The next record was worse.
After takeoff, Graham had sent a message through the crew tablet to station operations describing 38C as “potentially disruptive” before Mrs. Ashcroft had requested her tea.
The timestamp showed 2:28 p.m.
Lily remembered the flight timeline.
“That was before she did anything.”
Everyone looked at her.
Lily pointed at the timestamp.
“She hadn’t even pressed her call button yet.”
Mrs. Ashcroft leaned back.
“So the report did not document behavior.”
Captain Reyes finished the thought.
“It prepared a justification.”
Graham looked at Mr. Doyle.
The station manager did not look back.
Then Tess arrived.
She stood in the doorway with her coat over one arm, confused by the number of people in the room.
Graham’s eyes found hers instantly.
Tess stopped.
Mrs. Ashcroft saw the fear return to the woman’s face.
“Tess Avery?”
“Yes, ma’am.”
“Sit beside Lily.”
Tess obeyed.
Mrs. Ashcroft folded her hands.
“I’m going to ask you one question, and I want you to understand that your answer will not affect Lily’s probation or Graham’s evaluation of you. He no longer has that authority while this review is active.”
Tess swallowed.
“All right.”
“Was I verbally abusive to any member of the crew today?”
Tess closed her eyes briefly.
“No.”
Graham’s chair creaked.
Mrs. Ashcroft continued.
“Did Lily refuse a lawful safety instruction?”
“No.”
“Did Graham tell her not to serve row 38 unless he gave permission?”
Tess looked at Lily.
Then at Graham.
“Yes.”
The room became very quiet.
Graham leaned forward.
“Tess, be careful.”
Mrs. Ashcroft’s voice sharpened for the first time.
“No.”
Graham looked at her.
“She has been careful for four years. Let her speak.”
Tess’s eyes filled.
“There’s something else.”
Nobody interrupted.
She told them about the earlier passenger incident.
The false exaggeration.
The report she had signed.
The six-month ban.
The guilt she carried afterward.
Mr. Doyle rubbed one hand over his face.
Captain Reyes looked furious.
