"You will never touch her again."

Cole Vance did not shout the words. He said them in the measured voice of a man who had learned that the most serious promises were usually made quietly. His coffee was still warm on the table behind him, and the breakfast he had ordered was only half finished.

None of that mattered now. Across the counter of the Mountain View Diner, Lily Harper stood with one hand braced against the stainless-steel edge while Brandon Keller's fingers tightened around her forearm.

The orange juice pitcher had shattered at Lily's feet. A bright puddle was spreading toward the stools, taking broken pieces of glass with it. Someone near the door drew in a sharp breath. At the back of the diner, a spatula scraped uselessly against the grill. Twelve tables of people had witnessed Brandon seize her, and for one long moment all twelve had done what the people of Cedar Hollow, Montana, had become remarkably good at doing. They had waited for someone else to decide what happened next.

Brandon looked from Cole's face to his old denim shirt and the gray beard that made him look older than his fifty-four years. He gave a small, contemptuous smile. "You've got about three seconds to mind your own business, old man."

"Let go of her."

"She's my girlfriend."

"That doesn't make her your property."

Brandon's smile vanished. Lily tried to draw her arm away, and his grip followed her movement. Cole saw the effort it took her not to cry out. He had been noticing smaller versions of that same effort for months, although he had not understood their full meaning at first. Long sleeves in a sweltering diner. A smile that changed when a certain truck turned into the parking lot. An apology offered too quickly for something that had not been her fault.

"Last warning," Brandon said.

Cole looked directly at Lily. "Do you want him to let you go?"

Her answer was so soft that the far tables could barely hear it. "Yes."

"You heard her," Cole told Brandon.

The man finally released her arm, but he did it with the expression of someone surrendering a minor advantage in order to win a larger fight. He stepped away from the counter and moved into Cole's space. Behind him, Lily retreated toward the kitchen doorway, where Ray Mercer, the diner cook, stood frozen with a dish towel in his hand.

What happened over the next few seconds would be repeated around Cedar Hollow for months. Some people would make it grander than it was. Others would describe it as though Cole had beaten a younger man senseless. Neither version would be true. Brandon shoved him, Cole regained his balance, Brandon swung, and Cole moved aside before guiding the man's uncontrolled momentum down to the floor. There was no prolonged fight and no triumphant punch. Brandon ended up sprawled on the worn linoleum, breathing hard, with Cole holding him there long enough for him to stop struggling.
