He told her she was right. They talked for another half hour about ordinary things: her patients, a leaking faucet, the cost of groceries, a movie she wanted him to watch. By the time the call ended, Cole was reminded that the healthiest relationships in his life were not the ones in which someone obeyed him. They were the ones in which people trusted him enough to disagree.

In early November, the county attorney announced that the Brandon Keller matter would be handled by a prosecutor from outside the county to avoid an appearance of conflict. An independent investigative team had reviewed the diner witnesses and the available medical and digital evidence. Brandon was formally charged in connection with two incidents involving Lily, including the public assault at the diner and an earlier event supported by clinic records and contemporaneous messages. The allegations remained subject to the court process, and the prosecutor did not discuss details that might prejudice the proceedings.

Lily was present when Lena explained the charges to her. She had imagined feeling victorious if the day ever came. Instead she felt shaky and unusually quiet. A formal charge meant someone had believed enough of her account to take the next step, but it also meant hearings, lawyers, questions, and months in which she might have to describe the worst parts of her life again.

"Is it strange that I'm not happy?" she asked.

"No," Lena said. "You wanted safety. The legal process may help with that, but it isn't the same thing as peace."

That distinction stayed with Lily. She began taking longer walks with Anna's dog in Billings. She cooked dinners without checking the time every few minutes. She went to a movie with her sister and left her phone in her purse for the entire film. These were small achievements, and she disliked calling them achievements, but she could remember a time when each would have been impossible.

At a preliminary hearing, Brandon sat beside his attorney in a pressed shirt, looking less arrogant than he had in the diner and more frightened than Cole expected. Cole attended because he had been subpoenaed as a witness, not because he wanted to see Brandon humiliated. He gave his account of the October incident and answered questions about his own conduct, including why he had physically restrained Brandon and whether the restraint continued after the immediate threat ended.

He answered plainly. "I intervened when he grabbed Lily and continued after he struck at me. I stopped him moving long enough for him to agree to leave. Then I let him up."

The defense attorney asked about his club membership and whether nine motorcycle riders had later appeared in town. Cole confirmed both facts. He did not apologize for having friends, but he did not present their presence as a kind of legal authority. He emphasized that the riders had not participated in the diner incident and had no role in deciding what charges were filed.
