"Then tell me where I can give them," Lily said. "Not another pamphlet. Not a person who tells me to come back after I've been hurt again. A real place."

Marlene put a hand on the office doorframe but did not touch Lily. Ray stood behind the counter. Meredith wrote down the exact question and the silence that followed it. The sheriff looked around the room and seemed to understand, perhaps for the first time, that none of the familiar social pressure was working the way he expected.

"An outside agency can review the matter," he said at last.

"I've already contacted one," Meredith replied. "I haven't shared Lily's private materials, but I asked how to make a proper referral. We have instructions."

Keller looked sharply at her. "Who did you contact?"

"Someone who can tell us the process. That's enough for now."

He shifted his attention back to Cole. "You think you've accomplished something by making a spectacle?"

"I think the people in this room are finally willing to say what they saw. That's their decision, not mine."

"You don't understand the damage accusations like this can do."

Cole felt the old anger rise, hot and immediate. He pushed it aside. "Neither did Brandon, apparently."

The sheriff's phone rang. He glanced at the screen and moved toward the door to answer, but there was little privacy in a room where everybody had been listening to him for several minutes. He said only a few words before his posture changed. His free hand went still at his side. He asked one question, listened to the answer, and walked outside to finish the call.

From the window, Cole saw Keller turn away from the motorcycles and look down the street. Dex remained where he was, talking quietly with Owen about the weather. He was not on the phone. Whatever news had reached the sheriff had not come from a dramatic threat by a biker standing outside. Cole had asked Meredith to contact someone independent, and Marlene had documented the unanswered call for help. The sheriff had more than one reason now to understand that the matter was no longer confined to his office.

When Keller returned, his tone was different. He had spoken to the county attorney, who had been advised of the potential conflict and the existence of witnesses prepared to give statements. The county attorney had requested that reports involving Brandon and allegations of improper departmental handling be preserved for independent review. It was not an arrest order or a finding against anyone. But it meant the sheriff could no longer reasonably treat the allegations as a family misunderstanding to be settled over coffee.

"There will be an outside assessment," Keller said. "My department will not make decisions about my nephew's case without review."

Lily heard the words but did not feel safe yet. She had heard assurances before. Her stomach remained tense, and she was suddenly aware that she had been standing without moving for several minutes.
