“She didn't recognize the name.”

Renee sat back.

“So she thought you were exactly what Luke thought you were.”

Elijah's eyes lifted.

Renee continued:

“A guest with no influence.”

“Yes.”

“No connection.”

“Yes.”

“No ability to protect her.”

“Yes.”

“And she risked the job anyway.”

Elijah nodded.

“That is why this matters.”

Renee looked toward the window.

After a moment, she said:

“Why do people do that?”

“What?”

“Look at someone and decide what they're entitled to.”

Elijah leaned against the counter.

“Luke looked at me and ran a checklist.”

Renee nodded.

“Does this person match the room? Does he dress like the other members? Does he reinforce the image I want?”

“Exactly.”

“And when the answer was no, he stopped seeing the reservation.”

“Yes.”

“Membership.”

“Yes.”

“Payment.”

“Yes.”

Renee shook her head.

“People think prejudice always feels like hatred to the person doing it.”

Elijah looked at her.

“Most of the time it doesn't.”

“No.”

She tapped the note against the countertop.

“Sometimes it feels like instinct. Procedure. Standards. Protecting the room. Maintaining the brand.”

Elijah nodded slowly.

“That's exactly what it looked like.”

“Which is why it's dangerous.”

Renee continued:

“If Luke had screamed something openly hateful, half the staff would've known immediately that he crossed a line.”

“But he didn't.”

“No. He made one small decision after another and dressed each one as management.”

Elijah thought of Paige ignoring the phone.

The authorization slip.

The empty window table.

Destiny carrying the plate.

Renee said:

“Systems don't need to hate you.”

He looked at her.

“They just need to stop seeing you.”

Elijah sat across from her.

“And when someone like Destiny refuses?”

“The system punishes her.”

He stared at the note.

“She was the only person on that floor who treated me like I belonged there.”

“Then she belongs in the room more than Luke does.”

Elijah looked up.

Renee smiled faintly.

“You already decided something.”

“Yes.”

“What?”

“I'm calling Harold.”

“Tonight?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

He reached for his phone.

Renee stood.

“And I'm coming tomorrow.”

Elijah smiled.

“I assumed you would.”

Harold Bennett answered on the third ring.

“Elijah?”

“Harold.”

There was a pause.

“You've never called me directly at home.”

“I know.”

“Everything all right?”

“No.”

Harold's tone changed immediately.

“What happened?”

“I need you at corporate tomorrow at eight.”

“Eight?”

“Before the seventh floor opens.”

Harold was silent.

“Is this about the floor?”

“Yes.”

“Luke?”

Elijah looked toward Renee.

“Yes.”

Harold exhaled.

“What happened?”

“I can't get into all of it tonight.”

“Elijah.”

“I need you to trust me.”

Another pause.

“In twelve years, you've never asked me that quite like this.”

“I know.”

Harold's voice lowered.

“I'll be there.”

“Thank you.”

The next morning, Luke Whitmore arrived at Ashcombe corporate headquarters at 7:47.

He was annoyed.

Harold had called him just after six and told him to attend an urgent transition meeting.
