“I’ve had the reservation for two weeks.”

“Two weeks?”

Paige looked down again.

“Well, the concierge downstairs can sometimes be generous with confirmations.”

“They didn’t make it.”

“I’m sorry?”

“I made it directly with this floor.”

Paige blinked.

Elijah continued.

“Fourteen days ago. Someone named Mia confirmed it.”

Paige's eyes returned to the screen.

There it was.

Confirmed by seventh-floor reservations.

No ambiguity.

She handed the card back.

“The floor is quite full this morning.”

Elijah glanced across the dining room.

Five tables were occupied.

He said nothing.

Paige continued:

“I’ll need a few minutes to see what we can do.”

Elijah nodded.

“Take your time. I’m in no rush.”

That answer seemed to disappoint her.

Perhaps she had expected frustration.

Or perhaps she had expected him to realize that he had crossed some invisible boundary and leave voluntarily.

Instead, Elijah moved toward a leather bench near the windows and sat down.

His watch read 10:02.

The first guests who arrived after him were Mr. and Mrs. Calvo.

Paige's entire expression changed the moment she saw them.

“Mr. and Mrs. Calvo! Wonderful to see you both.”

Mrs. Calvo laughed.

“You're an absolute dream, Paige.”

“Your usual table is ready.”

They had no visible reservation confirmation.

Nobody asked them for membership cards.

Nobody asked whether they had the right address.

Paige simply led them inside.

Elijah watched without appearing to watch.

Five minutes later, another couple arrived.

Then two men in business suits.

Then a woman in workout clothes carrying a designer tote.

Then an older gentleman who greeted the bartender by name.

Every one of them was seated.

Elijah remained on the bench.

At 10:18, he made the first call.

He used the public floor number.

He could see the host station from where he sat.

The phone rang.

Paige looked down at it.

The caller ID displayed the internal member reservation line.

She did not answer.

After six rings, it stopped.

Elijah placed the phone face down on his knee.

He waited.

At 10:27, Luke Whitmore entered from the service corridor.

Elijah knew him immediately.

Whitmore was thirty-nine, polished, ambitious, and three weeks away from taking over daily management of the seventh floor after Harold Bennett stepped back into a group advisory role.

Harold had run the flagship floor for twelve years.

He knew families.

Birthdays.

Allergies.

Divorces.

Preferred wines.

Children's names.

Which members wanted conversation and which wanted silence.

His retirement from daily operations had been planned for almost a year.

Luke had been hired to succeed him.

On paper, the choice looked excellent.

Luxury hospitality background.

Strong revenue numbers.

Impressive references.

A reputation for improving margins.

Confident interview.

Elijah had approved the final hire after Harold recommended him.

He had not met Luke in person.

Until now.

Luke walked to the host stand and spoke quietly with Paige.

Paige glanced toward Elijah.

Luke followed her gaze.

His eyes traveled over Elijah from shoes to coat.

Then he leaned closer to Paige.

Elijah could not hear the first sentence.

He heard the second.

“If he asks, tell him the wait is normal for walk-ins.”

Paige whispered:

“He has a reservation.”

Luke shrugged.

“Then tell him we're behind.”

“He has a membership card too.”

Luke looked at Elijah again.

“A real one?”

“System accepts it.”

Luke lowered his voice, but the room was quiet.

“And Paige?”

“Yes?”

“Keep an eye on the silverware at whatever table we eventually put him at.”

Paige froze.

Luke continued:

“I don't think that card is real.”

“It scanned.”

“Cards get duplicated.”

He straightened his jacket.

“He doesn't look like someone who can afford this floor.”

Elijah's face did not change.
