“Sir, table assignments change constantly.”

“Then you instructed your kitchen not to waste a fresh cut on me.”

Harold's head snapped toward Luke.

Luke immediately said:

“That is not how I phrased it.”

A new voice came from the doorway.

“It is.”

Chef Antoine Mercer entered.

Luke turned.

Elijah gestured toward a chair.

Antoine sat.

Elijah said:

“Chef Mercer submitted his statement at six forty this morning after Harold contacted him.”

Luke stared at Harold.

Harold spoke for the first time.

“Tell me it isn't true.”

Luke leaned forward.

“Harold, you weren't there.”

“That is why I'm asking.”

Luke breathed quickly.

“The guest was causing disruption.”

Elijah said:

“I sat quietly.”

“You repeatedly challenged staff.”

“By asking about my reservation?”

“You were making people uncomfortable.”

“Which people?”

Luke had no answer.

Elijah continued:

“You directed staff to serve me food that had already been removed from guest service.”

Luke's voice rose.

“It was not spoiled.”

Harold stared.

“You did what?”

Luke looked toward him.

“The product was still usable.”

Antoine's expression hardened.

“If I pull a plate from service, it does not go back.”

“Chef.”

“No.”

Antoine pointed toward Luke.

“You do not get to reinterpret my kitchen standards after the fact.”

Luke turned back to Elijah.

“Sir, I was trying to manage costs.”

Elijah nodded.

“For one steak.”

“It's principle.”

“No.”

Elijah's voice remained quiet.

“It was judgment.”

Luke stopped.

Elijah continued:

“You had already decided what kind of guest I was. Every decision after that was built to match the first assumption.”

Luke looked toward Renee.

She said nothing.

Elijah opened another page.

“A server named Destiny Okafor placed a note beneath my plate warning me not to eat the food.”

Luke's jaw clenched.

“She violated direct management instruction.”

“You didn't know about the note.”

Luke looked at him.

Elijah continued:

“You saw her lean toward my table.”

“She was clearly interfering.”

“You guessed.”

“I knew.”

“No.”

Elijah leaned forward slightly.

“You guessed.”

Silence.

“And then you fired her based on that guess.”

Luke looked toward Harold.

“She was insubordinate.”

Harold said:

“How?”

“She challenged me in front of kitchen staff.”

“After you instructed her to serve rejected food?”

Luke did not answer.

Elijah continued:

“When you fired her, you told her you did not know who even employs people like her in a place like this.”

Luke shook his head.

“That was taken out of context.”

Renee finally spoke.

“What context improves it?”

Luke looked toward her.

None.

Elijah slid one final document across the table.

“Yesterday, when I demanded my payment back and asked for Destiny's job to be restored, you had security escort me from the building.”

Luke's voice weakened.

“I didn't know who you were.”

The room went still.

Harold looked down.

Antoine stopped breathing for a second.

Renee's eyes fixed on Luke.

Elijah sat back.

“That is the first completely honest thing you've said this morning.”

Luke realized the mistake.

“That's not what I meant.”

Elijah nodded.

“It is exactly what you meant.”

“No, sir.”

“You behaved that way because you didn't know who I was.”

“I mean I didn't understand the situation.”

“You understood everything you thought mattered.”
