Sophie considered this. "Did you wear the blue shirt?"
Ryan looked down at himself. "Why does that matter?"
"You wore the blue shirt. It was a date."
Ryan walked toward the kitchen. "Bed."
Sophie followed him, triumphant. "I am just saying."
He did not tell Claire about the conversation for three days.
When he finally did, she laughed hard enough to cover her face.
"The blue shirt?"
"Apparently dispositive evidence."
"I respect her methodology."
"Of course you do."
They kept seeing each other occasionally, but slowly and deliberately. Dinner once. Coffee on a Saturday. A walk through a holiday market in early December after Sophie insisted she needed help choosing a gift for her grandmother.
The company knew before they said anything because companies always knew. Ryan and Claire responded by doing the least dramatic thing possible: they disclosed the relationship to the board and Human Resources before it became formal.
Ryan's reporting structure remained unchanged. Claire had no role in his compensation or evaluation. Evelyn Ross documented the safeguards and made both of them slightly uncomfortable by being extremely thorough.
"This is not romantic," Claire said after the meeting.
Evelyn looked over her glasses. "Governance rarely is."
Ryan appreciated the process even when it was awkward. He did not want Sophie to learn that rules mattered only until powerful people found them inconvenient.
Claire understood that better than she would have a year earlier.
The relationship itself grew in small, uncinematic increments. Claire learned that Ryan went silent when worried rather than angry. Ryan learned that Claire organized kitchen drawers when anxious.
She discovered that Sophie needed ten minutes after school before answering questions about her day. Ryan discovered that Claire had no idea how much detergent belonged in a washing machine because she had used a cleaning service for most of her adult life.
"This is humiliating," Claire said while foam pushed against the lid one Saturday.
Sophie stared at the machine. "Did you put in the whole cap?"
"The instructions said one cap."
Ryan looked at the bottle. "That cap is for a commercial washer."
Claire folded her arms. "The company should redesign the process."
Ryan laughed so hard he had to sit down.
Sophie joined him.
Claire tried to remain offended and failed.
As December returned, the anniversary of the ultimatum approached without anyone naming it directly. Ryan noticed the first time the office speakers played "Silent Night" and stopped in the hallway for half a second.
Claire, walking beside him, noticed.
"You okay?"
