"Another refrigerator star?" Ryan asked.

"Yes."

Sophie held it flat so both adults could see.

Across the bottom, in her careful handwriting, were three names.

Ryan.

Sophie.

Claire.

Nobody spoke for a moment.

Claire looked at Sophie. "Are you sure?"

Sophie frowned. "I wrote it in marker."

Ryan laughed softly.

Claire's eyes filled before she could stop them. She did not reach for Sophie immediately, did not turn the moment into a speech, and did not ask what the star meant.

She simply said, "Thank you."

Sophie handed it to Ryan. "Put it next to the old one."

He took a magnet from the side of the refrigerator.

The first star was wrinkled now, its yellow paper faded slightly, blue marker still visible around the uneven edges. It had once traveled to work behind an employee badge because an eight-year-old wanted her father to remember a promise.

The second star was newer, larger, and made after years nobody could have predicted from that conference room.

Ryan placed them side by side.

He looked at the old one first.

It reminded him that promises mattered.

Then he looked at the new one.

It reminded him that people could change without pretending the past had not happened, that accountability could create room for trust, and that love did not need to erase grief to become real.

Claire stood beside him. Sophie was already gathering scraps of paper from the table, apparently finished with the emotional significance everyone else was assigning to her craft project.

Ryan reached for Claire's hand.

She took it.

Outside, December snow moved softly past the kitchen window.

Inside, breakfast dishes waited in the sink, one pancake was still too dark, Emily's photograph remained on the shelf by the dining room, and two paper stars hung beneath a small magnet on the refrigerator.

The older one carried the memory of a promise Ryan had refused to break.

The newer one carried three names in Sophie's careful handwriting.

Ryan, Sophie, Claire.
