Claire was in the middle of a strategy review with the executive team when her phone displayed the school's number.

She answered.

Ten minutes later she closed her laptop.

"I need to leave."

A vice president looked surprised. "We still have the acquisition model."

"Send me the final assumptions. We can finish tomorrow."

"The board expects a recommendation tonight."

Claire stood. "Then the board can receive it tomorrow morning."

There was a brief silence, the old cultural instinct waiting for her to explain why a private obligation deserved to interrupt a business deadline.

Claire did not explain.

She left.

At the school nurse's office, Sophie sat wrapped in a blanket with pink cheeks and an expression of deep personal betrayal by her own immune system.

"Dad is coming," Claire said.

"He texted. Traffic."

"I know. I am taking you home until he gets there."

Sophie nodded and leaned her head against Claire's arm.

The gesture was so trusting that Claire almost stopped walking.

At Ryan's house, Sophie fell asleep on the couch. Claire found the thermometer, water, and children's medicine exactly where Ryan had shown her months earlier.

Her phone buzzed four times with work messages.

She silenced it.

When Ryan arrived, snow in his hair and worry all over his face, he found Claire sitting on the floor beside the couch reading a report on paper so the laptop screen would not wake Sophie.

"How high?" he whispered.

"One hundred point eight an hour ago. Down to one hundred now. She drank water. No breathing problems."

Ryan touched Sophie's forehead, then looked at Claire. "Thank you."

"Of course."

His eyes moved to the printed report in her hand. "You left a meeting."

Claire shrugged. "Meetings are portable. Sick children are not."

Ryan smiled faintly. "That sounds familiar."

"I have had good teachers."

Claire stayed until Sophie woke and asked for toast. She left only after Ryan insisted he had things covered.
