Morrison slid Marcus's credential case and access card across the table. Marcus did not reach for them immediately.

"What happens to Voss?"

The prosecutor answered. "He is being placed on leave and ordered not to access department systems. Fraud investigators are preparing search requests for relevant financial records. Do not confront him yourself."

"Agreed."

"Officer Reigns remains on restricted status while Professional Standards and our office review the extortion evidence."

Marcus picked up his credentials. He had expected vindication to feel larger. Instead, it felt like being handed back something that should never have been taken. At 3:11 p.m., Captain Marcus Ellison walked through the Westbridge headquarters doors again. Conversations stopped.

This time the silence was different. Nobody knew yet what the forensic report said, but they knew he had his command badge back. Reigns stood near the briefing room. His face lost color when he saw Marcus. Voss was not there.

Deputy Chief Morrison had ordered him off the property less than an hour earlier. Marcus went directly to the operations floor.

"Listen up."

Officers turned toward him.

"The independent forensic review concerning my system access is complete. The allegations against me were not supported. Evidence shows the department's records were altered after my authorized access. That matter is now part of an outside investigation, and I will not discuss it further."

He paused.

"I know this week has made people angry, suspicious, and uncertain. Good. Use that feeling to remember why process matters. If the department could remove a captain based on manipulated records, it can do the same thing to a patrol officer, a dispatcher, a citizen, or a complainant."

No one moved.

"From this point forward, no one wins an argument because of rank. We win by preserving facts."

He dismissed the room back to work. Officer Torres waited until everyone began moving again before approaching him.

"Welcome back, Captain."

"Thank you."

"For what it's worth, some of us believed you."

Marcus looked at her.

"Next time, don't believe me. Check the evidence."

Torres smiled faintly.

"Yes, sir."

At 4:00 p.m., Detective Kim entered his office carrying a new file.

"The county fraud unit got bank preservation orders."
