Olivia immediately cut Richard off, pulling out a small stack of papers she had carefully prepared. She placed the documents on the table, her voice firm and clear.
"I spent all night gathering and thoroughly investigating similar incidents that have occurred on Summit Airlines flights over the past three months. Of the more than 27 cases where passengers were asked to leave their seats or were questioned about their seating despite having valid tickets, 23 of them were or from minority ethnic groups."
The room fell into stunned silence. Board members exchanged astonished and fearful looks. Olivia continued, her voice growing even clearer.
"Summit Airlines policy does not have any rules requiring the verification of passengers' identities based on their clothing or skin color. So I ask the three of you, Caroline, Richard, Diane: on what basis did you repeatedly make such unreasonable demands of me and others like me? Not because I dressed simply, but because I am and do not fit the profile of the kind of passenger you deem worthy of sitting in first class. Am I wrong?"
Olivia's voice was as sharp as a knife. Her words were powerful, and each one left Caroline, Richard, and Diane unable to respond. Diane lowered her head, tears falling, while Richard stammered, unable to speak.
Caroline tried one last time, her voice shaky and desperate. "I'm sorry. I really didn't think that deeply. I just thought you—"
Olivia sternly interrupted her once again. "You didn't think deeply, and that is the problem. It's because you didn't think deeply that you acted on implicit biases and unwittingly devalued the dignity of others. This is the most dangerous aspect of racism. It's not always obvious, but it always causes the deepest harm to those who endure it."
The room was utterly silent, the tension palpable. Olivia spoke again, this time with a slightly softer tone, yet still filled with strength.
"I'm not standing here to accuse anyone personally. I just want all of you to acknowledge the painful truth that prejudice and bias exist silently within all of us. If we do not recognize this and change from within through our thoughts and actions, incidents like mine will continue to happen, and many more people will suffer as I have."
Alexander placed his hand on his mother's shoulder, his eyes full of admiration and infinite gratitude. He continued, his voice now serious but filled with hope.
"From this moment forward, I request that we not only recognize the issue my mother just raised, but also commit to taking action to make real change. Summit Airlines will implement an extensive anti-discrimination and racial equality training program for all employees, starting today. We will not tolerate any actions that go against the values we have promised to uphold."
