"You said the board doesn't respect what you built," Lily replied. "You just told him what he builds doesn't matter." Catherine felt the comparison settle in her chest. She said Lily was right and promised to apologize without asking Daniel to pretend it had not happened. Lily wanted to know whether he would ever come back after finishing the fence, and Catherine said she did not know because that choice belonged to him.

Catherine found Daniel beside his truck, reviewing the final measurements. The gate behind him opened and closed cleanly in the breeze, and the repaired fence looked as though the accident had never happened. She stopped a few feet away and waited for him to finish entering the numbers. "Daniel," she said, "I owe you an apology."

He looked up but did not rescue her from the discomfort. Catherine told him she had been frightened by Richard's latest filing, angry with the board, and ashamed of how little control she felt she had. None of those feelings gave her the right to speak to him as if his work or his life were worth less than hers, she said. "I didn't say something careless. I said something mean. And my daughter heard it."

Daniel listened, his expression steady. He asked whether Catherine thought the apology was necessary because Lily had heard or because the words were wrong even if nobody else had. She swallowed and answered, "Because they were wrong." He nodded once, and the small acknowledgment made her aware that forgiveness was not something she could purchase by producing the correct sentence.

"I can finish the job and leave," Daniel said. "That's what we agreed to. If you'd prefer another contractor for anything later, I'll understand." Catherine told him she did not want to lose him as a contractor, then stopped because she could hear how inadequate the phrase was. "I'd also understand if you didn't want to hear another personal word from me," she added.

He closed the notebook and said that his work was honest work, that he had spent years becoming good at it, and that it had paid for his son's food, clothes, and a secure home during the hardest period of their lives. "You don't have to admire it," he said. "But you don't get to use it as a reason I'm beneath you." Catherine met his eyes and said, "You're right."

The silence that followed was difficult, which Daniel allowed. He told her he accepted the apology, but that trust would have to be rebuilt by how she treated him and other people when she was upset. Catherine did not argue or ask for immediate reassurance. She thanked him for staying long enough to hear her and went back into the house to tell Lily exactly what she had said.

Daniel finished loading his tools and prepared the invoice. He charged the agreed amount, included the gate repair separately, and attached the photographs showing the completed work. Catherine paid it promptly and did not add a large tip intended to turn her apology into a transaction. She wrote a short message confirming that she had received the work and appreciated its quality.
