They prepared dinner together, Catherine managing the sauce, Lily cutting bread, Noah setting out plates, and Daniel finding the small jobs nobody had assigned. Nobody had to explain why there were four places at the table. Catherine looked at the setting and remembered the weeks when she had eaten alone in front of a laptop while Lily carried a plate to her room. The contrast brought tears to her eyes before anyone had taken the first bite.

Noah noticed and asked whether she was all right. Catherine said yes, which was true in a way it had not been for a long time. He told her that his mother had built things too, and that Daniel said she would have kept building them if she had had more time. "I think it's important when people fight for what they make," he said, matter-of-factly, then returned to his pasta.

Catherine looked at Daniel across the table. He raised his eyebrows slightly, an expression that meant Noah's surprising statements were a regular feature and not something he intended to apologize for. Lily returned with ice cream and asked why everyone looked as if they were about to start crying over dinner. "Noah was being profound," Catherine answered. Noah informed them that he had his moments, and the children began arguing amiably about which flavor of ice cream deserved greater respect.

They stayed together until almost nine. When Daniel went to the door, Catherine walked with him into the space between the warm kitchen and the cooling night. She thanked him again for all the ways he had helped her see the problem clearly, and he reminded her that she had done the work, made the calls, and sat through the hard meetings herself. "You showed up when I needed somebody to hold a post," she said. "That wasn't nothing."

Daniel met her eyes. "I'm not going anywhere," he said. She replied that she had begun to believe him, not because he kept saying it but because he showed up on ordinary days. Then she told him she was not going anywhere either, at least not from whatever they were beginning together.

"This could be complicated," she said. Daniel agreed. She mentioned the children, the company, Richard, the memories of Sarah, and the demands of two lives that had already taken their own shapes. Daniel told her he had thought about all of those things and that being careful did not mean refusing to begin.

He kissed her gently, the way someone approaches a beautiful but important decision. Catherine kissed him back without the guardedness that had characterized their first meetings. When they drew apart she smiled in a way that changed her whole face. "That took long enough," she said.

"I told you," Daniel answered. "I set things deep, not fast." Catherine laughed softly and admitted she had been ready several days earlier. He said he had suspected as much, and she nudged his shoulder with an expression so ordinary and delighted that both of them began laughing again.
