Catherine watched her daughter disappear down the hallway, then went into the kitchen to make tea. She filled two mugs and placed them on the table without asking Daniel whether he wanted one. He sat where he had sat on the first morning while she signed the fence estimate, noticing that the room no longer made him feel like an employee waiting for instructions. There was a pencil on the counter with its eraser chewed by Lily, and a small model bridge on the windowsill that Noah had left there during the previous visit.

"She said something in that speech I haven't stopped thinking about," Catherine began. Daniel waited. She told him Lily had added the passage about unnamed people after working near him in the yard. "She wrote down what you said about the post," Catherine explained. "The thing that looked solid until you pressed at the base. Then she connected it to her research, and she was so excited she forgot to be guarded for an hour."

Daniel said the idea had become Lily's because she had done the thinking and the work. Catherine agreed but pointed out that people sometimes needed someone nearby before they believed their questions deserved answers. "You've been nearby in a way that helps," she said. "Not in a way that makes it about you." He looked into his tea because the directness of the praise was harder to accept than he expected.

She told him Richard had called that afternoon. Daniel looked up, suddenly aware that the conversation in his truck the previous Friday might have consequences he could not predict. Catherine said Richard had withdrawn the proposed custody modification and that his attorney had sent formal notice. More importantly, Richard had called Lily directly for the first time in months without a birthday, school requirement, or scheduled appointment as the reason.

"They talked for forty-five minutes," Catherine said. "I could hear her laughing after about twenty. She sounded like the little girl who used to ask him to build things with her." Daniel asked whether Catherine had spoken to Richard herself. She said only briefly, enough to confirm the filing was withdrawn and that they would continue using the current parenting schedule.

Then she studied Daniel. "Did you talk to him?" she asked. Daniel could have said it was none of his business and stopped there, but that would have been another kind of evasion. He told her Richard had called on Friday and that they had spoken about Lily, her interest in being heard, and the difference between having custody of a child and being present in her life.

Catherine sat very still. She had spent three years managing Richard through attorneys and carefully documented exchanges, terrified that one unguarded sentence could be used against her. Daniel had spoken directly to him, without anger or performance, and Richard had apparently listened. The difference was so strange that she did not know at first whether to thank Daniel or ask him why he had stepped into a matter that could have gone badly.
