Richard did not respond immediately. Daniel told him Lily had read the attorney's email and understood far more than the adults around her seemed to believe. "She doesn't want a legal strategy instead of a father," he said. "She wants you to listen to her." Richard exhaled slowly, and Daniel could hear a man confronting a version of himself he did not much like.

"She used to tell me everything," Richard said at last. Daniel replied that she might again if he made it safe to talk about things that were not scheduled or useful to him. He did not promise forgiveness on Lily's behalf or pretend one conversation could repair years of distance. He simply told Richard that the next right step was probably much smaller than another legal filing.

Richard said he would think about it. Before hanging up he asked whether the fence had turned out well, and Daniel answered that the line was straight and the gate was holding. "I saw it," Richard said. "It's good work." Daniel thanked him, ended the call, and sat in his truck for another minute before beginning the day.

That evening Catherine called to discuss dinner on Tuesday. Daniel told her nothing about Richard's call yet, not because he intended to hide it but because he believed Richard deserved the chance to tell his daughter he wanted to speak to her directly. He also understood that the conversation had not made him a mediator or a judge of anyone's family. He was a father who had said something one father needed to hear, and he hoped that would be enough.

When Noah asked at bedtime whether he could wear his good shoes to Lily's presentation, Daniel said the choice was his. The boy set them beside his bed with the care he usually reserved for expensive tools, then climbed under the covers and asked whether they were becoming friends with Catherine and Lily. Daniel answered that they already were friends, but that friendship was something people kept choosing through their actions.

"Does that mean we'll keep going there?" Noah asked. "I hope so," Daniel said. His son looked relieved, then thoughtful.

"Mom would have liked Lily," he said. Daniel believed it, and the certainty brought a brief ache that did not overwhelm the good feeling beside it. He kissed Noah good night, turned off the lamp, and stood in the hallway remembering that love could leave an absence and still make room for something new.

The following Tuesday, Lily was waiting in the driveway before Daniel's truck came through the gate. She wore dark trousers, a pale blue sweater, and an expression of fierce concentration that made her look so much like Catherine that he had to smile. Her presentation notes were arranged inside a folder held against her chest, and she had apparently spent the last hour checking that every page remained in the proper order. When Daniel parked at six-forty-eight, Noah unbuckled his seat belt with unusual care, mindful of the polished shoes he had insisted on wearing.
