Sterling noticed.
"What?"
Ethan checked a displayed offset.
"Who accepted this value?"
Grant stepped closer.
"Operations reviewed the fixture after the fault."
Ethan looked at Katherine.
She shook her head.
"Not me."
Ethan pulled the prior calibration history.
The offset was within the administrative tolerance but had moved enough to predict a correlation problem inside a month.
"It's nominal now," Grant said. "The system says green."
Ethan looked at him.
"Green means inside limit. It doesn't mean healthy."
He requested a repeat reference check.
The value moved again.
Sterling's quality director swore softly.
"We would have caught that at incoming correlation," she said.
"After acceptance," Ethan replied.
They corrected the fixture, reran the verification, and completed the package.
At four ten, Sterling signed acceptance.
The lot passed.
The flight-test schedule held.
The eight-figure renewal stayed alive.
Sterling closed the binder.
"Thank you."
Ethan nodded.
"You're good."
Sterling looked toward Vanessa.
"He's good."
Then he turned back to Ethan.
"If Blackwood doesn't know what to do with you after today, call me."
Vanessa heard every word.
Sterling left for the airport before six.
Ethan returned the visitor badge at the front desk.
Vanessa was waiting in the lobby.
Grant was not with her.
"Do you have a minute?" she asked.
Ethan looked at the clock.
"A few."
They walked into a small conference room beside reception.
Vanessa closed the door.
A folder sat on the table.
"I want to offer you your position back," she said.
Ethan looked at the folder but did not touch it.
"My old position?"
"No. Director of Technical Reliability. New group. Direct report to me. Salary adjustment, bonus eligibility, authority over knowledge transfer and critical-process reliability."
Ethan almost smiled.
