Sterling continued.

"We're renewing because Blackwood demonstrated it can preserve technical continuity beyond one person. Ethan being here matters. Ethan being the only person who can protect us would be a reason not to renew."

Vanessa understood the distinction immediately.

That had been her original principle in another form. No one should be irreplaceable.

The difference was that Sterling and Ethan had approached the principle by transferring knowledge. Grant and Vanessa had initially approached it by diminishing the people who possessed it.

Same concern.

Opposite method.

Carrington renewed the agreement.

The value exceeded the previous term by fourteen percent because the flight-test program had expanded. Blackwood did not win every piece of work, and Sterling rejected two pricing proposals as unrealistic.

That realism mattered.

Nobody was rewarded magically for learning a lesson.

They earned the contract because delivery, quality, and technical continuity justified it.

The board credited the renewal to the program team by name.

Ethan's compensation changed too.

His director salary was significantly higher than his technician pay, but the part Claire cared about was the college contribution he could now make without touching the emergency fund Lauren had left them.

In January, an acceptance letter arrived from a state engineering school Claire had wanted since sophomore year.

She read it at the kitchen table.

Ethan was making eggs.

"Dad."

Something in her voice made him turn immediately.

She held the letter in both hands.

"I got in."

He stared at her.

"You got in?"

She nodded, already crying.

Ethan turned off the burner and crossed the kitchen in three steps.

He hugged her hard enough that she laughed through the tears.

"You're crushing me."

"You got in."

"I need ribs for engineering school."

He released her slightly.

"Scholarship?"

Claire wiped her face.

"Partial."

"How partial?"

She gave him the number.

Ethan did the arithmetic automatically.

Claire watched his face.

"We can do it," he said.

"You sure?"

"Yes."

"Because of the new job?"

Ethan looked toward the letter.

"Partly."

Claire smiled.

"Then I guess Vanessa Blackwood accidentally paid for my degree."

"That is not how we're phrasing it."
