The sound rose through the plant.

Vanessa looked at Ethan.

"Do you regret coming back?"

He took longer to answer than she expected.

"No."

"Even after everything?"

"I regret that it took getting fired for the company to listen. I don't regret what we've built since."

Vanessa nodded.

"Do you forgive me?"

The question surprised him.

He looked toward the production floor.

"That's not a work question."

"I know."

Ethan thought about Claire, the cardboard box, the visitor pass, the public dismissal, and the year that followed.

"I don't wake up angry about it anymore."

Vanessa waited.

"That's probably the answer I have."

She accepted it.

"Fair."

They returned to work.

Blackwood's cultural changes did not make national news. There was no viral video, no business-school case study, and no dramatic magazine cover featuring Ethan with folded arms in front of a production line.

That was appropriate.

Most meaningful organizational repair is boring from a distance.

It looks like names appearing correctly on slides.

It looks like a technician taking twenty minutes after eleven hours without checking whether an executive is nearby.

It looks like a young engineer refusing to sign something she cannot verify and being thanked for it instead of branded difficult.

It looks like a chief executive reading the technical annex before the client calls.

It looks like a manager asking what happened before deciding what it means.

Claire left for college the following August.

Ethan drove her to campus in the same dark green pickup, now approaching two hundred fifty thousand miles. The toolbox in the bed rattled over every pothole.

Her dorm room was on the third floor of a brick building with no elevator.

Ethan carried boxes until his knees hurt.

Claire organized her desk, taped photographs to the wall, and pretended she was not nervous.

When everything was unpacked, Ethan stood near the door and looked at the room.

"You have enough money?"

"Yes."

"Meal plan loaded?"

"Yes."

"Emergency number saved?"

"Dad."

"I'm checking."

Claire walked over and hugged him.

"I'm okay."

Ethan held her for several seconds.

"I know."

"You can leave."

"That seems aggressive."
