“Standing beside the diner.”

Nora’s voice remained calm.

“The bell rang. Everybody came out. He didn’t go inside or get into a car. He watched.”

Lucas felt cold despite the warm garage.

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?”

“I wasn’t sure he was watching me.”

“Did you see his face?”

“Not clearly.”

“Then how do you know it’s him?”

Nora looked down.

“Shoes.”

Jojo stared.

“Shoes?”

“Same left heel.”

She pointed toward the man’s worn sneakers.

“The rubber is missing on the outside edge. He walks slightly inward on that foot.”

The deputy looked down involuntarily.

Nora continued.

“And there’s a dark stain on his right cuff.”

There was.

Grease or paint.

The same irregular patch.

Lucas asked, “Anything else?”

“He checked his phone whenever someone came out alone.”

The deputy began writing.

“Did he photograph anyone?”

“I think so.”

Miller looked at the evidence folder.
