Jojo laughed.

“She got you.”

Lucas nodded.

“Fair.”

Nora reached into her backpack.

She pulled out a folded sheet of heavy sketch paper.

“I made something.”

She handed it to Miller.

He unfolded it.

The drawing showed the interior of the garage.

The back door.

The long workbench.

The shadowed hallway.

A figure standing near the door.

Not the intruder.

Miller.

She had drawn him before he opened it.

One hand raised.

Stopping everyone.

Listening.

At the bottom Nora had written:

The safest person in the room is not always the strongest one.

Sometimes it is the one who stops everybody else from moving.

Miller read it twice.

His throat tightened.

“You drew this when?”

“Yesterday.”

He looked toward the garage.
