“What makes you think that?”

“The sound is wrong.”

Lucas lowered his sandwich.

“How?”

“The outside door rattles higher.”

She pointed discreetly.

“That came from the inside latch.”

For a second Lucas simply stared at her.

The conversation around them continued.

Music.

Laughter.

Plates.

Then Nora added something.

“I heard something scrape after it moved.”

Lucas’s face changed.

Not dramatically.

Just enough.

“Stay here.”

“I am here.”

“I mean don’t go toward the door.”

“I wasn’t planning to.”

Lucas set his drink on the nearest bench.

He lifted one hand.

“Kill the music.”

Jojo looked over.

“What?”

“Kill it.”

Something in Lucas’s tone ended the question.

Walsh reached up and turned the speaker off.
