Sergeant Cole turned toward her.

"Ms. Mitchell, I'm going to ask you not to debate the witness while I'm trying to collect statements."

Sandra crossed her arms. The gesture looked very different now than it had fifteen minutes earlier. The live stream kept climbing.

Maya's viewer count passed fifty thousand, then sixty. The comments had reversed with brutal speed. People who had called Kesha entitled were deleting posts or pretending they had always been suspicious of Sandra. Others replayed the earliest minutes and posted clips showing Kesha seated, speaking quietly, and repeatedly asking the crew to verify facts.

Aaron Patel watched the same reversal with professional disgust. The internet had not become more principled. It had simply received a new hierarchy. He typed another update on the aviation forum.

IDENTITY REVEAL SHOULD NOT DISTRACT FROM CORE ISSUE: PASSENGER APPEARS COMPLIANT BEFORE CREW LEARNS WHO SHE IS. That post spread farther than any of his earlier ones. Sergeant Cole asked Maya to stop streaming once formal witness interviews began. Maya complied immediately and saved the video locally, then sent an untouched copy to an evidence link provided by airport police.

"Do not edit it," Cole told her.

"I won't."

"Don't add captions before you send it."

"Already uploaded raw."

"Good."

The businessman in 3C, whose name was Blake Stanton, tried to leave his seat.

"I have a meeting in New York."

Cole looked at him.

"So do several people. Sit down until the captain releases the cabin."

Blake flushed. A half hour earlier, he had enjoyed the authority of telling Kesha that his schedule mattered more than her dignity. Now he experienced the humiliating ordinariness of being told to wait. Kesha noticed but felt no satisfaction.

Zoe had finally fallen asleep against her chest. The baby's eyelashes rested against soft brown cheeks. Her hand remained curled around the edge of Kesha's sweater as though nothing in the cabin had changed. Kesha's cheek had begun to throb.

Elena Cruz appeared beside her holding a sealed cold pack wrapped in a clean cloth.

"Mrs. Thompson?"

Kesha looked up. Elena seemed terrified.

"This is just ice. I haven't opened it. Sergeant Cole said I could offer it if you wanted."

Kesha accepted it.

"Thank you."

Elena hesitated.

"I'm sorry."

"For what part?"

The question was not cruel. That made Elena's eyes fill faster.

"I should have said something sooner."

Kesha shifted the cold pack against her cheek.

"You helped with the bottle."

"That's not what I mean."

Kesha knew. Elena looked toward Sandra.

"I heard what she called Zoe. I saw how she kept escalating. And after she hit you, I froze."

Kesha watched her for a moment.

"Tell the truth when they ask you."

Elena nodded.

"I will."
