"I know."
"We've been advised you're refusing crew instructions."
"I have complied with every instruction that was actually given to me."
Sandra scoffed. Williams raised one hand.
"Please let me finish."
Kesha stopped.
"Federal regulations require passengers to comply with lawful crew instructions related to safety. If the lead attendant believes your conduct is creating a safety concern, I have the authority to remove you before departure."
Kesha glanced at Zoe, who was beginning to quiet again.
"Captain, before you make that decision, please verify my boarding status and ask your crew what happened before you entered this cabin."
"I have been briefed."
"By the person who hit me."
The cabin shifted. Williams looked at Sandra. Sandra spoke immediately.
"She raised her hand at me. I reacted defensively."
Kesha stared at her.
"I reached between you and my baby after you moved toward us."
"That's not how I saw it."
Williams looked toward the passengers.
"Did anyone witness physical contact?"
Maya raised her phone.
"I recorded it."
Williams glanced at the phone but did not ask to see the video. That decision later appeared on page forty-two of the independent review. He had an available source of immediate evidence. He chose not to examine it.
Instead, he turned back to Kesha.
"Regardless of what happened, the situation is now disrupting departure."
"The disruption began because your flight attendant assaulted me."
"Ma'am, I'm not going to litigate that in the aisle."
Kesha almost smiled at the word litigate.
"Then verify my ticket."
Williams held out his hand. She gave him the boarding pass. He looked at it for less than two seconds.
"Seat 2A."
"Correct."
"Valid boarding pass doesn't give anyone the right to interfere with crew operations."
"I haven't."
He handed it back. He did not scan the code. He did not ask the gate agent to confirm the status. He did not review the seat-service notes showing Kesha had complied with every request.
He did not ask Elena Cruz what she had witnessed. Instead, he accepted Sandra's description and moved the problem one level higher.
"I'm asking you to deplane voluntarily."
Kesha's heart began beating faster.
"On what basis?"
