"Ma'am, are you injured?"

"My cheek hurts. I don't need medical treatment right now. My baby is physically okay as far as I can tell."

"Did you strike the flight attendant?"

"No."

"Touch her?"

"I put my hand between her and my child when she moved toward us."

Cole looked toward Maya.

"You have video?"

"Yes."

"Don't delete it."

Sandra's confidence faltered for the first time. Williams stepped forward.

"Sergeant, I still need the passenger removed so we can depart."

Cole looked at him.

"If there's an assault allegation, we're going to document before anyone goes anywhere."

The first-class cabin went very quiet. Kesha looked at Marcus's name still glowing on her phone. She answered.

"Hi, honey."

His voice came immediately.

"You missed three calls. Are you and Zoe okay?"

Kesha looked at Sandra. Then Williams. Then Sergeant Cole.

"We're safe at the moment. I'm having some trouble on your airline."

There was a pause.

"Which flight?"

"Eight forty-seven. Nashville to New York."

Across the aisle, Aaron Patel froze. The wording landed first. Your airline. Williams heard it too.

So did Sandra. Marcus's voice sharpened.

"Kesha, put me on speaker."

She did.

"I'm Marcus Thompson, chief executive officer of Skylink Airways. Before anyone touches my wife or daughter, I want the captain to confirm that airport police are present and that the reported assault is being documented."

No one moved. It was not a shout. That made it worse. Captain Williams went pale.

Sandra stared at the phone. Maya's live-stream counter jumped so quickly she thought the app had malfunctioned. Aaron Patel closed his mouth slowly. Sergeant Cole was the first to answer.

"Mr. Thompson, Sergeant Dana Cole, Nashville airport police. We are present. There is an assault allegation involving a crew member and your wife. We are preserving the scene and taking statements."

Marcus exhaled audibly.

"Thank you, Sergeant. Please proceed exactly as you would for any passenger."

That sentence mattered. Kesha's eyes closed briefly. Marcus continued.

"Captain Williams, are you there?"

Williams swallowed.

"Yes, sir."
