His heart accelerated.
Then Warren’s warning returned.
Do not fall in love with your answer.
Eli checked again.
Different scale.
Different reference points.
Same result.
The next evening he brought everything to Marcus.
His father was sitting at the kitchen table doing expenses.
Eli spread the papers beside him.
Marcus sighed.
“Eli.”
“Just look.”
“I am looking.”
“The old well was here.”
He pointed.
“The pond is here now.”
Marcus studied the overlay.
“Approximately.”
“Within maybe twenty feet.”
“Old surveys aren’t GPS.”
“I know.”
“What exactly are you asking me to believe?”
“That the well wasn’t filled properly.”
Marcus leaned back.
“And sixty years later it suddenly became a pond?”
“No.”
