Eli pointed to the depression.
“I think the pond formed because the well has been settling for years.”
“Son.”
“The waterline has moved almost four feet since August.”
“We had rain.”
“The cattle stopped using that corner.”
“Cattle avoid places.”
“The mud is sinking in a ring.”
“Erosion.”
“There’s bubbling in the middle.”
“Gas in the mud. Rotting vegetation.”
Eli took a breath.
“Maybe.”
Marcus looked surprised.
“Maybe?”
“I’m not saying every clue proves the well.”
“Sounds like you are.”
“I’m saying all of them point to the same place.”
Warren sat at the far end of the table listening.
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
“Your grandfather put you up to this?”
“No.”
Warren answered for himself.
“Boy came to me.”
Marcus looked at him.
“You actually believe this?”
“I believe nobody here watched that well get filled.”
