“Filled.”
“You saw them fill it?”
Warren shook his head.
“No.”
“Who did?”
“My father said it was handled.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
Warren’s eyes narrowed with amusement.
“You’re getting annoying like your father.”
“Did you see it filled?”
“No.”
“Did Grandpa’s father?”
“He was the one who said it was done.”
“How?”
“I don’t know.”
“With dirt?”
“Probably.”
“Was it capped?”
“Likely.”
“What kind of cap?”
“Boy, you’re asking me about work done before I had hair under my arms.”
Eli looked toward the pasture.
“How close was it to the pond?”
Warren’s expression slowly changed.
That was the first moment another person followed Eli’s thinking.
“You think the pond formed over the well.”
“I don’t know.”
