Harold arrived Monday morning.
He did not walk casually toward the pond.
He stopped fifty feet away and studied the stakes.
“Who laid these out?”
Marcus pointed at Eli.
Harold looked at him.
“How?”
“Steel probe.”
“At random?”
“Grid.”
Harold nodded.
“Good.”
He asked for the history.
Warren gave it.
Old house.
Hand-dug well.
Supposed closure.
No witness.
Harold looked at the pump housing.
Then the aerial overlay.
Then Eli’s notebook.
“You kept dates?”
“Yes.”
“Waterline measurements?”
“Yes.”
“Rainfall?”
Eli hesitated.
