He drove stakes.

Ran string.

Checked setback.

Measured again.

His father had a rule.

Measure until you are bored.

Then measure once more.

Garrett followed it.

By sunset, the first steel post stood anchored inside a reinforced footing.

The top remained temporarily braced.

Garrett stood back.

Looked at it.

The change was small.

One post.

But the intention was visible.

That evening, Victoria drove past.

Garrett was putting tools into his truck when her SUV slowed.

She looked at the post.

Then at the pallets of stone.

Their eyes met.

Victoria smiled.

Not friendly.

More like someone noticing an opponent had finally made a move worth watching.

She drove on.

Monday morning, Garrett poured the second footing.

Tuesday, the first masonry section began rising.

Wednesday, the wall extended along the entrance.

It was not a fortress.

Despite what neighborhood gossip later called it.

It was a substantial ranch entry wall approximately shoulder-high near the gate, tapering outward into lower stone sections connected to the existing perimeter fence.

Steel reinforcement ran inside.

Stone facing matched rock already used around the barn.

Garrett chose earth-colored material deliberately.

He wanted the structure to look like part of the ranch.

Not an act of war.

Neighbors stopped.

One elderly man named Harold Pierce parked near the shoulder.

“Garrett.”

“Morning.”

“What are you building?”
