Retaining walls.

Equipment platforms.

A workshop extension.

After his father died, Garrett rebuilt the old equipment shed almost entirely by himself.

He understood materials.

More importantly, he understood what happened when a material was asked to do a job it was not designed to do.

The old wooden gate had been designed to mark an entrance.

Not stop someone determined to ignore it.

So Garrett changed the design problem.

That afternoon, he drove to a building supplier outside town.

He purchased steel posts.

Structural tubing.

Reinforcing bar.

Stone.

Concrete.

Heavy hinges.

Anchor hardware.

He also ordered prefabricated stone-faced wall panels rated for exterior use.

The sales clerk looked at the materials list.

“Building a bunker?”

“Gate.”

The man looked again.

“That is not a gate.”

Garrett smiled.

“It will have one.”

A delivery trailer followed him back to the ranch.

People noticed.

Pine Valley was the kind of neighborhood where a delivery truck generated curiosity before the driver even set the parking brake.

By four, three cars had slowed near the ranch entrance.

By five, someone had posted a photograph to the neighborhood social group.

Miller Ranch construction?

Anyone know what’s happening?

A response appeared seven minutes later.

Probably another barn thing.

Then:

That is a lot of stone for a barn thing.

Garrett did not see the thread until much later.

He was measuring.

The existing opening was wider than necessary because old hay trucks once needed room to turn.

Garrett planned to narrow the functional entrance while maintaining enough width for agricultural equipment.
