The wall became ordinary surprisingly quickly.

At first, cars slowed.

Then fewer did.

Eventually, newcomers assumed it had always been there.

That amused Garrett.

One Saturday the following spring, a couple recently moved into Pine Valley stopped near the gate.

The husband admired the stonework.

“Nice entrance.”

“Thanks.”

“Original to the ranch?”

Garrett looked at the wall.

“No.”

“When did you build it?”

“Last year.”

“What happened to the old one?”

Garrett smiled.

“Wasn’t strong enough.”

The man nodded as if Garrett meant weather.

Garrett let him.

He no longer needed the story to be famous.

That had never been the goal.

Years later, the wall remained.

Stone weathered.

Metal darkened.

Native grass filled the base.

The old wooden gate stayed in the barn.

Garrett eventually turned part of it into a bench.

He kept the section carrying his father’s original hinge marks.

Sometimes visitors sat there while Garrett worked.

Most never knew what the wood had once been.

The ranch itself changed more slowly.

One horse died.

Another arrived.

Fences were replaced.

The old barn roof received new metal.

Pine Valley added another phase of houses farther south.

The public road around the hill was widened.

The supposed crisis of neighborhood connectivity disappeared into history.

What remained was a boundary everybody understood.
