"Premium is not a protected reservation category," Lena explained. She had been invited to the review because her screen and printed notes were central to the issue, and she seemed uncomfortable occupying a chair usually reserved for managers. "We have loyalty tiers, corporate rates, accessibility requirements, room guarantees, and service recovery procedures. But that label doesn't tell us who authorized taking a confirmed room from somebody else."

Grant crossed his arms. He had agreed to attend only because Richard asked directly, and he appeared determined to turn the meeting into a discussion of commercial priorities. "Those four changes concern guests whose compensation we can easily manage," he said. "Every large property makes exceptions when an important opportunity presents itself."

"Who decided their compensation would be enough?" Richard asked.

"I made the decision."

"Did you tell them beforehand?"

"We intended to explain at check-in."

"Then you did not give them an opportunity to choose. You let them travel here believing one thing, and you planned to tell them another when they had already arrived."

Grant looked around the table for support, but Malcolm was reading the records and Kenji's expression did not change. Vanessa told the group that the family suite had already been restored and that the grandparents had been moved back into connecting rooms. She had authorized service recovery where appropriate, not as a payment for silence but as compensation for the hotel's mistake. Richard instructed her to provide the board with a full list of affected guests after the gala, excluding unnecessary personal information.

Priya joined the meeting by speakerphone from the ballroom office. She had recovered the prior approved event schedule through the system's version history, a task made possible because the software retained changes by individual credential. The active schedule had not vanished in the sense of being deleted from every server. A manager had replaced its visible version with a different event record, leaving staff without the correct instructions while the old one remained recoverable in the archive.

"At 4:41 p.m., the approved charity program was replaced with an event titled Executive Hospitality Preview," Priya said. "The replacement used a management credential. At 4:46, a second authorization added twelve guests to a private list and changed tables two through five. At 4:50, the regular program was hidden from the front-of-house display."

"Who used the first credential?" Richard asked.

"The access belongs to Mr. Mercer. The second approval was entered through an event-administration account assigned to management support. I'm requesting confirmation of who actually used it."

Grant lifted a hand. "We were preparing a separate presentation for Julian Vale. The private event was routine."

"Then why did it replace the charity schedule?" Vanessa asked. "We had one ballroom, and the presentation was never approved for that space."

"Because the system doesn't handle parallel events elegantly."

Priya did not speak for a moment. Then she said, "It handles them perfectly well if they're created as separate events. This one was written over the approved gala record."

Richard looked at Grant. "Did you authorize that?"

"I authorized necessary flexibility. I didn't personally click every button."

"Nobody asked whether you personally clicked every button."

The quiet response made the room uneasy. Richard did not raise his voice because he was not trying to win a debate with an employee who had more practice at debates than at admissions. He wanted Grant to understand that there would be no escape through vocabulary. A management position carried responsibility for instructions given under it, even when someone else completed the administrative work.
