Kenji asked for the signed event orders, and Vanessa provided the original program approved six weeks earlier. Margaret would introduce the learning center after the meal, children from the program would present a short musical piece, and Richard would confirm the foundation donation. Julian Vale was welcome as an invited guest, but he had no scheduled presentation and no entitlement to displace the beneficiaries of the event. The new version, by contrast, placed Vale's group near the front, shifted Margaret to a rear table, and substituted a private investor preview for part of the community program.
"Who created the investor preview?" Malcolm asked.
"I suggested it," Grant said. "The Vale group might invest in a new hotel project. That opportunity could fund years of community programming."
"Then seek the investment on its own merits," Malcolm replied. "Don't pretend a separate commercial discussion entitles you to change a charitable event we promised people months ago."
Grant looked insulted. He had been accustomed to Malcolm speaking about budgets, not ethics, and he resented the accountant stepping into what Grant considered an operational matter. But Malcolm could not look at the foundation's mission documents without seeing the families whose meals and tutoring would depend on tonight's decision. Money mattered because of what it could do, and an event's purpose mattered because it prevented the money from becoming someone else's status symbol.
David reported that the community families had been given incorrect arrival instructions, but the entrance had been restored and no one was being routed through the closed service area. Isabel was personally confirming that every family had a place at the tables originally assigned. Richard asked whether anyone had been refused entrance or physically turned away. David said he had found no record of that, though several guests had been delayed and embarrassed by conflicting instructions.
"That's enough to require apologies," Richard said. "We don't need a bigger incident before we admit there was a smaller one."
Vanessa sent the approved seating chart to the ballroom team. Priya confirmed it could be restored without disrupting the kitchen service, provided the changes happened before guests were seated. Kenji asked whether the event could proceed on time, and Vanessa said it could if nobody issued further unauthorized instructions. Grant opened his mouth, but Richard spoke before the words came.
"For tonight, Vanessa will control the operational schedule. All changes must go through her and be logged."
Grant stared at him. "You're taking the event away from me?"
"I'm protecting the event from further confusion while we review the changes. You will still have an opportunity to explain your decisions."
The difference mattered to Richard. He would not permit a manager to use his title to bully staff, and he would not repeat the mistake by pronouncing a final disciplinary verdict before reviewing the records. Grant would be heard, and the employees he had directed would be heard separately, without pressure from the man who signed their performance reviews. The staff needed to know the process could be fair even when the person under scrutiny was powerful.
As the group prepared to leave, David mentioned the sealed envelope being held at the reception correspondence station. It had been transferred upstairs without authorization by someone who thought the label indicated private meeting materials. The receipt showed the intended addressee as Richard Whitmore, but the original package had been rerouted toward the ballroom podium. When David discovered the discrepancy, he secured it in a tamper-evident document pouch and logged the transfer with Lena's assistance.
"Did anybody open it?" Richard asked.
"Not according to the chain-of-custody entries. The seal is intact."
"Do we know who sent it?"
David glanced at Grant before answering. "The sender is Elliot Hayes. He asked if the document could be returned to him if it hadn't reached the intended recipient. He said he would come here himself."
