The yellow instruction sheet stayed in a folder in his home office. He had also kept a duplicate copy of the approved running order, a printed message showing the time Grant delivered the change, and an acknowledgement from the banquet captain who had received the revised schedule. None of the documents guaranteed that Elliot had managed every part of that evening perfectly. They did, however, challenge the assertion that he had invented the change without authorization.

"Why bring them now?" Richard asked.

Elliot looked down at the papers. "Because I read about tonight's gala and saw that the program supported a learning center, just like the event we got wrong five years ago. Then someone who still works here told me families were being moved from their seats for important guests. I thought about staying away, but I kept seeing the faces of the people who waited behind the stage that night. I thought that if I'd spoken up harder then, maybe this wouldn't still be happening."

Richard leaned forward. "You weren't responsible for making management listen. You were responsible for reporting the problem honestly, and from what you've shown us, you tried. We will have an independent review of all of this, including the records from the time."

"I don't want another investigation that ends with a private letter nobody sees," Elliot said. "I don't want anyone embarrassed for the sake of it, either. I just want the truth where the accusation went."

Kenji looked toward Richard. The original dismissal had become known among employees, and the hotel had promoted Grant after the event, while Elliot had been remembered as the man who spoiled the program. An apology restricted to a quiet office would not address all of the harm if the evidence confirmed his account. Still, the senior board representative insisted they verify authenticity and provide Grant an opportunity to respond before announcing factual conclusions.

Richard agreed. He asked David to scan the documents through the hotel's secure records process with Elliot's written consent and to preserve the originals in their sleeves. He also instructed Vanessa to retrieve the 2019 incident report, employment records, and archived event-system logs without alerting anyone who might be tempted to alter them. Then he asked Elliot whether he was willing to meet Grant that night if the preliminary records supported what he had said.

Elliot took a long breath. "Yes," he replied. "But I don't want him shouting me down again."

"He won't be permitted to," Richard said. "You can stop the discussion whenever you choose."

While Vanessa gathered the old documents, the room became quiet. From somewhere down the corridor came the sound of children singing, followed by warm applause that did not sound like the sort of polite applause people gave an important sponsor. Elliot's face changed as he listened. For years he had remembered a charity event ending with awkward silence and people quietly asking why the honorees had been pushed aside; now he could hear a room celebrating the children it was supposed to be celebrating.

"That's what we were trying to do five years ago," he said.

"Then we should have helped you do it," Richard answered.

Grant was summoned from the separate office twenty minutes later. Before he entered, Vanessa offered him the opportunity to have a human resources representative and his own adviser present, and he chose to bring the hotel's HR director, Helen Brooks. He entered with a controlled expression, but his face changed the moment he saw Elliot sitting at the table. Grant stopped just inside the doorway as though he had walked into a room from an old dream he had hoped never to revisit.
