Richard sat beside Kenji at table one and watched Elena's face as she saw herself briefly on the screen. She looked embarrassed by the attention but proud when Mateo nudged her and whispered something that made her smile. The chairman wondered what his mother would have thought of the room, with its flowers and expensive wine, and hoped she would have noticed the children before she noticed anything else. He had given a hundred speeches about service and responsibility, but something about arriving unrecognized had made him suspicious of speeches that required no sacrifice from the person giving them.

Vanessa finished the introduction and invited Richard to the stage. Some guests already knew his face; others recognized his name but had never seen him in person. The applause was polite until a whisper began moving between the tables near the lobby entrance. Lena, standing just beyond the doors, watched Grant look toward the stage and realized the man in the old coat had been the chairman all along.

Richard thanked Vanessa, adjusted the microphone, and looked across the room. He had planned to speak about the foundation's history, the hotel's community obligations, and the children who would benefit from the grant. Instead, he began with a simpler observation. "A little while ago, I arrived at this hotel as an ordinary guest," he said. "I had a confirmed reservation, and I expected the promises made to me to be honored."

The room became quieter. Richard explained that his room had been reassigned, that an invited community guest had almost lost an accessible room, and that families invited to the gala had been told to use a service entrance that was closed. He did not identify the affected guests without permission or turn their experience into a story for applause. He spoke about the decisions and the obligations they revealed, including his own responsibility for having accepted good revenue as evidence that the hotel's culture was sound.

"People come here to be welcomed, not judged," he said. "A guest's appearance cannot tell us whether a promise matters. Every guest deserves the respect we would offer if we knew that their opinion could change our future."

Grant stepped toward the front of the room. Richard had not named him, and for a brief instant Grant considered remaining still. But the fear that his reputation was being dismantled in front of potential investors overwhelmed his judgment. He took the second microphone from its stand and cleared his throat loudly enough to interrupt the applause.

"Mr. Chairman," he said, "with respect, perhaps we should return to the evening's program. Our guests came to enjoy a celebration, not to watch internal management matters become a public spectacle."

Richard looked at him. "You're right that they came for a celebration. Some of the people we promised to celebrate were almost excluded from it. I think acknowledging that is part of getting the evening back on course."

"You're turning a few routine adjustments into a condemnation of my management."

"The records will determine what happened. Right now, I'm telling our guests what we intend to do differently."

Grant turned toward the tables, seeking the agreement he was accustomed to finding when he spoke confidently enough. Some people looked at him with irritation, others with confusion, and several simply waited for Richard to finish. Elena had put a protective arm around Lucia, who did not understand the argument but knew from the tension in the voices that the adults were no longer discussing the children's concert. Margaret sat very straight in her chair.

"I'm still the general manager," Grant said, gripping the microphone. "And I have obligations to our sponsors, our investors, and the reputation of this hotel."

"Then honor those obligations without treating the others as disposable," Richard answered.

Grant's face flushed. He turned toward Vanessa, who was standing beside the stage steps. "Remove him from the program. Now."
