Then her earpiece crackled. "We've got a second arrival list at the east doors," Priya said. "Julian Vale's party has eight additional names. They have management authorization codes, but they're not on our approved invitations."

"Don't let the codes substitute for verification," Vanessa replied. "Find out who added them, confirm whether there is physical space, and bring them in without displacing anyone who's already seated."

"They're asking for tables two through five."

Vanessa looked at the children laughing at table four. "Those tables are occupied by people who were invited here months ago. We are not moving them."

By then, Grant had appeared at the east doors with Julian Vale, a silver-haired investor in a dark green dinner jacket, and several guests whose expressions suggested they were accustomed to being met by name. Grant was smiling broadly, as if the last hour had been a minor administrative inconvenience rather than the closest he had come to losing control of his own hotel. He greeted Vanessa with a cheerfulness she recognized as an attempt to instruct her without appearing to do so. "Let's make room for Mr. Vale's party at the front," he said.

"The original seating has been restored," Vanessa answered. "If additional invitations are valid, we'll accommodate them at available places without relocating confirmed guests."

Grant lowered his voice. "Vanessa, this is not the moment to be rigid."

"It is the moment to keep a promise."

Julian glanced between them, then toward table four. He was successful enough that he no longer needed to pretend he didn't notice people being pushed aside for him. "Grant," he said, "are those the families this gala is supporting?"

"Yes, but I can rearrange—"

"Don't." Vale looked faintly embarrassed. "My associates and I can sit wherever there's room. I came to hear about the program, not to watch the people it serves lose their seats."

Grant's smile held, but the muscles around his eyes tightened. He had gambled that a rich guest would be grateful for special treatment and that gratitude would translate into business. Instead, the guest had exposed the assumption beneath the gesture. Vanessa asked Priya to confirm the additional names with the hosting office and show Vale's party to an available table once the invitations were verified.

"And the penthouse?" Julian asked casually. "I was told the hotel was preparing something exceptional for me."

Vanessa met his gaze. "The suite had already been reserved for another guest. We have prepared a comparable accommodation and would like to apologize for the confusion."

Julian frowned. "You told me the penthouse was available. Did I unknowingly take somebody's room?"

"The assignment was made without the correct approval," Vanessa said. "We're correcting that."

"Good. I don't want it under those circumstances."

Richard heard about the exchange a few minutes later as he came downstairs in a charcoal suit that had been tailored years before but still fit him perfectly. He was standing near the ballroom doors when David reported that the visiting party had settled without incident. Richard looked toward Julian Vale, who was speaking warmly with the founder of a neighborhood arts charity, and made another note: important guests did not always demand the privileges managers invented on their behalf. Sometimes they simply needed to be told the truth.

At 6:36, Margaret Ellis came down from her corrected room, carrying the same repaired suitcase strap wrapped around a small cloth bag containing her notes. Lena met her by the elevator and offered to keep the bag safely behind reception until after the gala. Margaret accepted, then glanced toward the ballroom with a worried expression. She had been told the program was back on schedule, but the humiliation in the lobby had left her less certain that the welcome would last once the chairman went away.
