Anger.

Then disbelief.

Then humiliation.

Then something almost embarrassingly practical.

I remembered the venue deposit.

The caterer.

Photographer.

Hotel block.

Flights my parents had started looking at.

Wedding invitations that had not yet been printed.

October suddenly looked less like a future and more like an approaching deadline.

I took photographs of the messages.

Every important one.

Every date.

Every direct lie.

I did not keep scrolling into irrelevant work conversations.

I had enough.

Then I checked our shared calendar.

The dates lined up.

The black dress.

Sophie.

Late work.

The supposed client reception.

Cape Street Bar.

One by one.

It was amazing how quickly confusion became clarity when the missing information appeared.

At 8:24, I heard the front door.

Emma rushed inside.

“I forgot my iPad.”

I had returned it to the counter.

I was sitting with coffee.

She stopped.

“You okay?”

“What?”

“You look upset.”

“I’m fine.”

“You sure?”

“Just tired.”

For one moment, she looked concerned.

Genuinely.

That was hard.

She walked over.

Kissed my cheek.

“I’ll be home around six.”

“Okay.”

“Dinner?”

“Sure.”

Then she grabbed the iPad and left.

I sat there listening to the door close.

The kiss remained warm on my cheek.

I wiped it away.

Then immediately hated myself for making the gesture.

I called my brother.

James answered:

“Shouldn’t you be working?”

“I need you.”

The joking disappeared from his voice.

“What happened?”

“Emma.”

Silence.

“What did she do?”

“I found messages.”

“How bad?”

“Three months.”

“With someone?”

“Yes.”

“Physical?”

“Kissing.”

“Maybe more.”

“Definitely emotional.”

James cursed quietly.

“Where are you?”

“Home.”

“She know?”

“No.”

“Michael, end it today.”

I stared at the coffee.

“I think she’s planning to ask for a break tonight.”

“What?”

“I saw messages.”

“She wants space to figure out if she wants him.”

James became very quiet.

Then:

“Do not let her turn you into a waiting room.”

That sentence stayed with me.

“Come here.”

he said.

“You can stay as long as you need.”

I packed a bag before noon.

Not everything.

Work clothes.

Medication.

Laptop.

Documents.

A few personal things I did not want caught inside an emotional fight.

Then I started making calls.

First, the venue.

I told the coordinator I needed information about cancellation.

Not yet to cancel.

Just terms.

She checked our contract.

“If you cancel before the six-month cutoff, you recover seventy-five percent of the venue deposit.”

“What date is the cutoff?”

“Next Tuesday.”

Of course.

“What if we cancel today?”

“I can send the form.”

“Please.”

The caterer was similar.

Most of the deposit refundable until final menu confirmation.

Photographer kept a smaller nonrefundable retainer.

Florist had not received anything beyond consultation.
