She wanted an audience because an audience made her brave.
“How long?”
She looked at me.
“A few months.”
My stomach dropped.
A few months meant wedding planning.
Venue visits.
Invitation samples.
Cake tasting.
Nights when she had kissed me goodnight and rolled over.
A few months meant she had attended appointments with me while sleeping with someone else.
“Have you slept with him?”
Sarah exhaled sharply.
“Alex.”
“Yes or no.”
“Yes.”
The room became completely silent.
My hearing changed.
That is the only way I can explain it.
I could see people moving, but sounds seemed distant.
I looked down at my hands.
The simple engagement band Sarah had given me months earlier sat on one finger.
We had joked that she did not see why only women got something symbolic during an engagement, so she had bought it for me.
I had loved that.
Suddenly it felt absurdly heavy.
Sarah kept talking.
“It wasn’t planned.”
I looked up.
“But I’m not going to apologize for what I did.”
Then came the smirk.
Small.
Confident.
Almost challenging.
My disbelief must have shown.
She continued.
“I know how that sounds.”
“Do you?”
“Yes. But it showed me something.”
“What?”
“What I was missing.”
I stared at her.
“Cheating on me showed you what you were missing.”
“You’re twisting it.”
“I’m repeating it.”
Sarah’s voice sharpened.
“Liam understands ambition.”
I almost laughed.
“Ambition.”
“He wants to see the world. Build something. Live bigger.”
“And I don’t?”
“You want stability.”
“We were planning a wedding.”
“I know.”
“You were planning it too.”
“I thought that’s what I wanted.”
“And while we were paying deposits, you were sleeping with him.”
She rolled her eyes slightly.
That small gesture hurt almost more than the admission.
“Please don’t turn this into some dramatic morality play.”
I felt something inside me go still.
Not rage.
Something cleaner.
Clarity.
“Are you leaving me for him?”
Sarah hesitated.
“I don’t know.”
“You don’t know.”
“I need space to figure out what I really want.”
“And you expected what from me?”
“I thought you’d understand.”
I almost smiled.
“Understand what?”
“That relationships change.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“You expected me to wait.”
Her expression flickered.
That was it.
She had.
Sarah believed she could explore Liam while I remained available as the dependable option.
The safe man would stay safe.
The loyal man would stay loyal.
The forgiving man would wait until she decided whether excitement worked out.
She had not confessed because she respected me enough to tell the truth.
She had confessed because she believed there would be no serious consequence.
“You think I’m still marrying you.”
Sarah’s face hardened.
“I think you’re emotional right now.”
