Held it out.
VIP ACCESS.
WILLA TOWNSEND.
The company field had intentionally been left generic at Willa’s request.
INVESTOR.
Dana checked the code on her handheld device.
Green.
Valid.
She looked uncomfortable.
“It is valid.”
“Yes.”
“But for the comfort of other guests—”
Willa repeated the phrase.
“For the comfort of other guests.”
Dana swallowed.
Willa’s voice remained measured.
“You are asking me to leave a section I am authorized to occupy because the man who insulted me is uncomfortable that I remained here.”
Dana looked down.
“I’m doing what I was told.”
“I know.”
Willa stood.
Picked up her iPad.
Her coffee had gone cold.
“What’s your last name, Dana?”
The young woman looked frightened.
Willa softened.
“I’m not threatening you.”
“Kim.”
“Dana Kim.”
“Yes.”
“You’re doing your job.”
Dana relaxed slightly.
“But I want you to remember this.”
Dana looked up.
“One day, somebody below you in an organization is going to tell you a decision feels wrong.”
Willa paused.
