More Latino founders.

More people with regional accelerators on their badges instead of Stanford, Harvard, or familiar Silicon Valley institutions.

Not transformed.

No room changes that quickly.

But different.

At one o’clock, the emcee introduced Willa.

This time applause began before her name was finished.

People stood.

Willa walked onto the stage.

For a moment, the previous year overlaid itself on the room.

Garrett fifth row.

Tessa’s phone.

The weight in Willa’s chest.

The security office.

Then the image faded.

Willa reached the podium.

Waited.

Applause settled.

“Last year,” she began, “I stood here and told you about the morning I was told I did not belong.”

The room became quiet.

“A lot happened afterward.”

A few knowing smiles.

“Some of it useful.”

She looked across the audience.

“Some of it performative.”

That earned a little laughter.

“I spent the year thinking about what consequence is actually for.”

She paused.

“If consequence only humiliates the person who did harm, then we have created another spectacle.”

Willa looked toward the third row.

“If it changes what becomes possible for somebody else, then perhaps we built something.”

Keisha realized where Willa was looking.

Her eyes widened.

Willa continued.

“Twelve months ago, one of the founders in this room was working from a one-bedroom apartment.”

Keisha lowered her head.
