“We need you to come with us.”
“I already verified my ticket.”
“Ma’am—”
“I have valid credentials.”
The taller officer's tone remained professional but firm.
“We’ve been instructed to confirm identity in the security office.”
“By whom?”
He hesitated.
“Event operations.”
“Who specifically?”
“We can clarify that downstairs.”
Around them, people had stopped walking.
Four attendees stood near a water station.
One lifted a phone.
Recording.
Again.
Willa felt something inside her crack.
Not rage.
Weariness.
The kind that accumulates across decades.
She could reveal herself now.
Could say the words.
I am your keynote speaker.
I run Ascend Capital.
Call Rachel Bennett.
But another part of her resisted.
Why should dignity require a résumé?
“Fine,” she said.
“I’ll come with you.”
They escorted her past a banner mounted against the corridor wall.
INNOVATION STARTS WITH INCLUSION.
Willa almost laughed.
She did not.
The security office sat near the loading area.
Plastic chair.
Fluorescent lighting.
