Denise looked at him. "I know you have a report. My instruction is not to change it." Ethan stopped speaking. For the first time, he was on the receiving end of the tone he had used on Maya. He had discovered that being certain of his authority did not prevent a different authority from asking questions he could not answer.

The airport police officer stepped into the aisle and asked where the passenger conduct concern had originated. Ethan indicated Maya. "Seat 1B repeatedly refused directions to stop recording and encouraged others to interfere with crew duties," he said. The officer looked at Maya, who was still seated with Lena close by and a small sealed juice box resting beside her papers. He did not reach for restraints, raise his voice, or assume that an airline complaint automatically meant a crime had occurred.

"What specific safety threat are you reporting?" he asked Ethan. "A refusal to comply with crew instructions," Ethan answered. The officer waited. "Which instruction, and what was she doing at the time?" Ethan glanced at the phone in Maya's hand.

"She was recording despite repeated instructions to stop." The officer looked toward Denise. "That's a matter we'll have to examine in context. Recording alone doesn't tell me there was a safety threat."

Maya felt a tightness inside her loosen slightly. The officer turned toward her and introduced himself as Officer Daniel Ruiz with airport police. He asked whether she wished to explain what had happened, and she described the coffee cup, the confirmed meal, the threats, and the medical concern without interruption. Lena supplied her name and profession, then explained what she had observed and why she had been concerned. The officer listened, asked about any physical confrontation, and noted that Maya had remained in her seat during the incident.

"I want a medical assessment available for her," Lena added. Denise looked toward the jet bridge and signaled for the two medical staff to come forward. Maya had not expected that, and the speed with which help appeared made her feel more exhausted rather than less. An airline representative could summon assistance within seconds once corporate security arrived, but the flight crew had spent hours arguing while she asked for food. She wondered how many people had experienced the same difference between what an organization could do and what it chose to do.

"I have an allergy and an ongoing problem with low blood sugar," Maya told the medical staff. "I used my own glucose supplies and a sealed juice box provided by another passenger. I feel steadier, but I haven't eaten a proper meal." They asked appropriate questions, checked her condition, and discussed whether further evaluation was advisable. She agreed to continue the assessment in a private airport room rather than stand in a crowded aisle. Lena stayed nearby to provide the timeline Maya had authorized her to share.

Denise turned toward Clare. "Where is the medical tray assigned to seat 1B?" Clare's mouth moved before sound came out. "It was cleared from 1A." Denise glanced at her tablet.
