Maya paused. The question sounded so normal that her throat tightened unexpectedly. "Yes," she said. "That's right." Ariel poured the coffee into a cup with a lid and placed it beside the protected meal. Then she stepped back, leaving both where Maya could reach them without anyone else claiming them.

For a moment, Maya simply stared at the cup. It was warm, slightly bitter, and completely unremarkable. Three months earlier, a cup just like it had been taken from her hand in front of an entire cabin, and the gesture had become the beginning of an ordeal she still struggled to understand. Now the cup remained where it belonged. Maya wrapped her fingers around it and felt tears threaten before she could stop them.

Ariel noticed but did not make a scene. She checked that the label was facing Maya and said quietly, "If you need anything, please press the call button. I'll come."

Maya looked up at her. "And someone will answer?" Ariel's expression softened. "Yes, ma'am. Someone will answer." She hesitated as though deciding whether to say something more personal, then glanced toward the galley to make sure she wasn't delaying the boarding process.

"I hope this isn't unprofessional," Ariel said softly, "but I wanted to thank you." Maya looked at her. Ariel kept her voice low.

"I was hired through the new recruitment review. Before this, I'd applied twice and never got a clear answer about why I wasn't selected. I finally received an interview where someone measured what I could do instead of telling me I didn't have the right presence." Maya looked at the young woman's badge again.

"Your work got you here," Maya said. Ariel nodded. "I know. But someone had to make them look at the work."

She paused, then added, "My mother saw your video. What she remembered wasn't the fame afterward. She remembered you staying in your seat, telling them the truth even when they wanted you to be frightened into silence." Maya's eyes lowered toward the cup. "No one should have had to go through that for this to happen."

"I know," Ariel said. "But it did happen. And we have a chance to do better now."

She smiled gently, then returned to the galley to help an elderly passenger who needed assistance securing a cane. Maya watched her work, noticing how naturally she asked the passenger what would be most comfortable rather than deciding for him. It was not a dramatic act. It was the kind of ordinary respect that should never have been exceptional.

Outside the window, ground vehicles moved past in the afternoon light. A baggage cart rattled over a seam in the pavement. Maya took a slow sip of coffee and found that the taste was almost painfully familiar. She had not expected a drink to carry so much memory. She set it down carefully and opened the meal pouch, checking the label one last time.

Her phone buzzed with a message from Naomi. Back on Crestline today. How does it feel? Maya looked from the screen to the sealed meal, then toward Ariel, who was listening patiently to another passenger's question. She typed one word.
