In the car to her hotel, Maya finally let herself lean against the headrest and close her eyes. Lena sat beside her, visibly tired but unwilling to leave until Maya was safely settled. "Does it feel better now?"

Lena asked. Maya considered the question.

"I feel relieved that they can't pretend they don't know. But I don't feel good. I don't think I will until I know something changes." Lena nodded. "That sounds right."

Maya turned toward her. "When you stood up for me, you didn't know about Williams Meridian." Lena laughed softly. "I knew you were someone whose blood sugar was falling while people argued over your food. That was enough."

Maya felt tears sting her eyes before she could look away. "It should have been enough for everyone," she said. Lena looked out at the sleeping city. "Yes. It should."

By the time Maya reached her hotel room, morning light had begun to gather beyond the curtains. She called her mother before sleeping, partly because she needed to hear a familiar voice and partly because she knew the videos were everywhere. Her mother answered on the first ring. "Baby, are you hurt?"

The urgency in her voice undid Maya more completely than any confrontation of the night. "I'm all right," Maya said. "I had a frightening evening, but I'm being looked after."

Her mother listened without interrupting while Maya explained the coffee, the meal, the nurse, the threats, and the emergency meeting. When Maya mentioned that the airline chairman had offered her money to keep the incident private, her mother was silent for a long moment. "Your father would've told you to keep that paper," she said at last. Maya looked toward the folder on the desk. "I did. I kept copies of everything."

"And what did you learn?" her mother asked. Maya stared through the window at the city she had worked so hard to reach. "That having power doesn't guarantee you'll be treated fairly. It just means some people change their tone once they realize you have it." Her mother sighed softly.

"Then don't let them forget the way they talked to you before they knew. That's the truth they need to hear." Maya felt her breathing settle. "I won't."

She slept only a few hours. When she woke, Naomi had sent a carefully organized folder containing witness contacts, medical notes Maya had authorized for her counsel, preserved video files, the original contract packet, and a copy of Crestline's revised public statement. The statement acknowledged that the company had received credible allegations of a confirmed medical meal being served to another passenger, inappropriate language by a crew member, and inadequate response to medical concerns. It promised an independent review and requested that the public refrain from harassing individuals while facts were established. Maya considered it a better beginning, though far from an ending.
