The screen door opened.

Lily stepped onto the porch.

Yellow sundress.

Bare feet.

Crayon behind one ear.

Biscuit clutched under one arm.

She stopped when she saw Evelyn.

Evelyn looked at her.

Something shifted.

Not pity.

Daniel knew pity.

This was recognition.

“Hi,” Evelyn said.

Lily did not answer.

Evelyn did not repeat herself.

She did not bend down.

Did not say, “Are you shy?”

Did not ask Daniel whether Lily could hear.

She simply nodded once as though silence were an acceptable response.

Lily sat on the porch step.

Evelyn looked back at Daniel.

“Your daughter?”

“Lily.”

Evelyn’s eyes returned to the child.

“Seven?”

Daniel nodded.

The air between them changed.

Daniel looked at the unfinished steps.

Then Evelyn.

“Coffee?”

For a fraction of a second, relief crossed her face.

“Yes.”

They sat on the porch for two hours.

At first they discussed Arcturus.

Then they stopped.

Daniel told her only what he felt comfortable telling.

Claire.

The accident.

Lily’s silence.

The remote request.

The exhaustion.

Evelyn listened without trying to convert anything into a policy problem.

That surprised him most.

At one point Lily pointed toward the yard.

A robin hopped near the oak tree.

Daniel followed her finger.

“I see it.”

Evelyn watched the exchange.

Lily pointed again.

The robin tilted its head.

Evelyn said softly, “American robin. They listen for worms under the soil.”

Lily looked at her.
