Visitors sometimes asked why he displayed a child’s drawings beside professional awards and photographs from Project Lighthouse.

Daniel always gave the same answer.

“They’re the most accurate organizational charts I’ve ever seen.”

Most people laughed.

Evelyn always did.

Lily, older by then, usually rolled her eyes.

Captain never cared.

On quiet evenings Daniel still sat on the porch after everyone went inside.

The oak tree had grown no more dramatic with age.

It simply remained.

Roots deep.

Branches wide.

Taking up exactly the space it needed.

Sometimes Daniel thought of the glass tower.

The elevators.

The fourteenth floor.

The stairwell window.

The badge.

He did not regret those years.

They had built part of him.

But they had not owned all of him.

That distinction had taken him too long to learn.

One evening Evelyn came outside carrying two cups of tea.

She handed him one and sat beside him.

“What are you thinking about?”

“The Monday I quit.”

“Again?”

“Apparently I’m nostalgic.”

“For resigning?”

“For being terrified.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“You didn’t look terrified.”

“I was.”

“What were you afraid of?”

Daniel watched the valley darken.

“That I was making the biggest mistake of my life.”

“And?”

He looked through the window.

Lily, now talking animatedly to Captain as though the cat had committed some serious offense, moved through the kitchen.

Her voice reached them faintly through the glass.

Daniel smiled.

“I was.”

Evelyn frowned.

He continued.

“I just misunderstood what kind of mistake it was.”

She waited.

“I spent too long believing staying was automatically the responsible choice.”

He took a sip of tea.

“Leaving should have happened sooner.”

Evelyn leaned back.

“That makes my company sound terrible.”

“It was occasionally terrible.”
